If the spring is out of the car, it's fairly an easy job. As '42 wagon states if it is still in the car, a spring spreader is a MUST. Place the car on jack stands and remove the tension before you do anything. Also change the bushings in the axle tubes while you have it apart. If you aren't comfortable doing the job ask for help.

I presume you mean the rubber bushings in the spring shackles. If you take those apart without releasing the tension in the spring you are asking for more excitement than most of us can stand. You need to beg, or borrow a spring spreader to release the tension and you will need to put a pair of jack stands under the frame so it doesn't come down on top of you. You really need to find a repair manual or the advice of someone who has done it before.

Thinking of replacing the rear spring rubber bushings on my 46 coupe simply because they appear old and deteriorated. Does this involve compressing the spring, or is it simply a matter of driving out the old bolt, inserting the new bushing, and reassembly. Don't want to get into a DFWI project.
