I have all the bolts out of the banjo & it doesn't pull apart, do I need to also take the backing plates for the brake shoes apart?

The hubs must come off. A KRW hub puller is best for this. Do not use a generic puller that pulls from the studs.

You do not have to remove the backing plates.

The drums/hubs must come off before you can completely remove the axle housings. Make sure you have a good drum/hub puller to get those hubs off the tapered axles. The KR Wilson repro by Winfield Tool Company, works very well. John

An interesting thing about these rear ends is that the gaskets between the center section and the axle housings are part of the adjustment of the rear end. If it turns out that the bearings and gears are good and the wear pattern is good all you need to do is replace the gaskets with the same thickness (note that they will probably be different between the two sides). Why do you want to take the rear end apart? As several others have noted USE THE CORRECT PULLER ON THE HUBS. Van Pelt Sales (http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/flathead_home.htm) rents them, they are advertised in the V8 times magazine and sometimes local clubs have one for their members to use. It is a PITA to set the gear meshing on a rear end. IMHO avoid taking apart a rear end unless absolutely necessary. You will get tired of repeatedly re-assembling the rear end if you have to. Ask me how I know.
