Is there a way to gain adequate valve clearance in a Flathead V-8 without pulling the valve out of the engine to shorten the valve stem? The valvetrain in my rebuilt engine was installed by a machine shop in another city. When I checked the valve clearance before finish assembling the engine I noticed that three of the valves are too tight. One of the exhaust valves has only .007" clearance. Is it possible to use a one-sided blade type of file to file the end of the valve down .006" to gain adequate valve clearance with the valve in the engine? I know that getting the filings out of the engine could prove to be a problem but I really don't want to pull the valve out to adjust the clearance. Please advise of your thoughts. Thank you.

Sorry. There is no good way to fix your problem except to pull the heads and the valve assemblies. Grinding the stems to provide proper clearance requires a machine the provides an absolutely flat end, or the lifter will be damaged. If you don't restore the clearance that was set too tight, your engine will run poorly, and the valves will be damaged. If that mistake was made, you have to wonder about the rest of the work.

You can install adjustable lifters. That would require removing the heads one more time, but that would be the last time for awhile.

Take the engine back and have them adjust the clearance to the correct gap.
