  7. VIEWING MULTIPLE TOPICS ON SCREEN: You can choose to see more than 10 Topics at a time ... Log In and choose "Preferences" from the top bar on the Forum page. Scroll down and Change the "Default Topics Returned" parameter to 25 or 50, and save the changes. Since this setting is stored in your browser 'cookies' (if enabled), it seems to use that stored value even if you are not logged in. So, if you use a PC that you haven't logged into the forum from, the setting still seem to remain at the default.
  8. EXTERNAL PHOTO LINKS ON FORUM: You can still use external photo links in your posts on the new forum. They follow the rules of any link in that they have to have the URL link qualified down to the full image file name (example: .jpg). The links will open in a new browser window, the same as an uploaded image attached to a post. Since an image attachment to any post does not display inline with the post, the results are the same. You can use multiple external links within a post. This link is from photos on a site from Don Clink's 'Deuce@75' albums:

    http://donclink.com/deuce_75_1/images/dscn2950.jpg

Using links from photo sites such as Photobucket can help in "size" issue with uploaded attachment files. For best viewing in web browsers, photos should be around the 800x600 pixel range, and probably not more than 1024x768. Most cameras today store HUGE jpg image files, as the default settings are in the 7, 8, 10, and 12Mb image sizes. The image files that are then attached are very large, and the browser can't display the full image size without using the scroll bars. Use the re-sizing functions of your photo editing software to reduce the image to 800x600, which reduces the file sixe and the image load time in the browser. Don uses Google's free Picassa3 software, which is an excellent photo management product. All of the photo albums of the Deuce, Grand National, and Auburn that are links on the NORG site were built using Picassa's web creation functions. And it's free? (THANKS to Don Clink for the info!)
  9. HOW DO I SHOW MY EMAIL ADDRESS ALONG WITH MY USERNAME? You can LogIn on the Forum, and select PREFERENCES. On this page Members can add optional information such as their City,State, Country; Occupation; Hobbies: list a Homepage; list AOL Instant Messanger Handle; Signature; "Make Email Address viewable to others;" and even change the number of Default Topics shown on a page. I'm having some difficulty ordering parts because I don't know what I have and I was hoping someone could shed some light on the subject. I have a 1947, 158 inch, platform truck. The registration says it's a 799T and that it's a 1 and 1/2 ton.

The diffy has the numbers cast into it.."8-115". I'm working on a leaky pinion seal and the outer most bearing.

I ordered the pinion seal based on the parts book from the 42-47 Commercial Rear axle. I checked the seal against the old one and the ID measurement is ok but the OD on the old one is much larger. Another example is a locknut in the book says it's a 1 and 9/16" but mine is 2 and 1/8th.

It's frustrating trying to get parts when I'm not sure what I have. Any help would be appreciated. Also whould anyone know what the torque spec is for the nuts against the outer bearing?

Thanks in advance,

Jack

Jack: I can't find any torque spec for the pinion lock nut. My manual says "tighten the rtaining nut securely. There should be NO PERCPTIBLE END PLAY (their capital letters), and bearings should roll freely. Finding parts for big truck axles is complicated by the fact that Ford used several suppliers, such as Dana and Spicer. It is also possible that the axle was swapped some time in the past. With axle parts being quite expensive, it was often easier, and less expensive, to make a trip to the junk yard.

Thanks for the info Supereal, I will be putting everything back together in the morning. I expect to research a source for parts but what's frustrating as you mentioned is the lack of information. Very few parts are listed in the green book for 158 inch trucks.

Fleetpride had located a pinion bearing for me by number but they had to find a seal by measurements and though it's not as beefy as the original, it should work.

I have several projects waiting for the truck to be running and I'm hoping for a little dependability.

Thanks again,
Jack

We seldom rely on the original numbers for bearings, as most suppliers can't cross reference them. We take the bearings, and races, to a specialist for comparison. Most Timken bearings haven't changed much, if any, over the years, and can usually be matched. It is always good practice to replace the race when the bearing is changed, anyway.

After my son and I got the driveline back together I drove it about seven miles. The smoothest ride so far and not a vibration anywhere. Went out the next day to give the wife a ride and the driveline vibration was back just as strong as ever..

Today, my son and I blocked up the rear axles and removed the rear drive shaft. We spun the wheels by hand in both direction with no noise or binding in the diffy. Then after reassembling we ran through 2nd, 3rd and 4th with the engine at about 700 rpms.

2nd and 3rd was smooth but in 4th a change in the pitch was heard at the same time the shift lever would move. It wasn't constant but sporadic. Now we're thinking possibly a bearing in the tranny ??

I've been chasing this vibration down for a while and haven't pinpointed it yet. This truck sat for twenty years in a field with scrub trees growing up through it so a little while longer won't hurt it.

Jack: that sounds like a u joint or center bearing problem in the driveshaft, a typical situation with big trucks. After they are run, and the drive live warms up and gets loose, vibrations are common if any part is worn. Just last week we replaced the center bearing in a big truck at our shop. The driver told us that he thought a u joint was failing. We did replace one of them as a preventative measure, but the rough center bearing was allowing the drive shaft to whip.

When I first got the truck a year ago while greasing the driveline, rust came out of the center bearing so I changed it. I've had both drive shafts off the truck and pulled the caps off the three universals. No sign of a problem in fact they were apparently changed by the previous owner. I have no end or side play anywhere.

I'm wondering about having the drive shafts balanced if for no other reason than eliminating them as the problem.

Thanks for the reply Supereal, I appreciate the feedback.

Jack
