You have a banjo out of a Lincoln Zephyr.

These were the only ones that featured a Hypoid final drive. I believe the reason was to lower the driveshaft to make a flatter floor in the Uni-body Zephyr's and Continentals, much like Ford did to an extreme degree in 1957 when they came out with the "9-inch Ford" rear axle and bent the frame rails out to allow the floor to drop inside the frame.

Thanks Stroker: I found a photo of 39-41 Lincoln Zephyr rear. I do believe your right on. Balance of rear axle has the Columbia Two Speed overdrive assembly. I have taken it all apart to rebuild it. Hope to install just the overdrive section under my 1941 Ford Conv., unless someone talks me out of it. Quite clean inside with only a few small pits. Plan to use a pull-push cable to operate it. I have an BW R10 overdrive under my 1929 Ford 150A Station wagon for 30 years. Larry
