Dayton, Welcome to the Club. I too own a 1939 Mercury Sedan and am in the process of a Body on restoration. I will echo the comments of others in that Tom O is an excellent Technical resource and has helped me several times during the 7 years I have owned the Merc. My attraction to the 39 also relates to a family connection. My grandparents owned one when new and my Dad drove it as a senior in High School, then my Uncle and Grandmother drove it until 1948. My Dad and Uncle talked about how they loved the performance of the 39 Mercury and how it could best a Buick Century in a drag race. My grandparents, my Dad and my Uncle have all passed so I finally purchased mine in 2008. I believe I had some "spiritual help" in finding this car. Let me know if you have questions, I will help if I can. Steve Middleton 39Mercury

Tom, Thank you VERY much. The pics confirm that the correct arms are retained by a nut. Scott

For the record, I completed (with lots of help) a body-off restoration of a '39 Mercury. I have lots of images. If you think an image would help details, let me know. Completed car image attached.

Hello Gentlemen, I know it's been 6 months- heres the status. The floor pan wasnt as bad as I thought so I went ahead and took the body off and rolled the frame/chassis out from under it. The engine is in Iowa, it's been to the machine shop, and Monday (Memorial Day) I'm going down there to help the guy put it back together. The frame has been sand blasted and epoxy primered, and the front and rear axle/chassis parts are coming along. Question about the brake and clutch assembly. Do you have a link to how to pull it apart and overhaul it? I heard the 39 is unique and parts are tough to come by. Does it need a press to get apart and back together? I might be able to just clean it up and put it back in- it's not that sloppy. Dayton
