Play in Shifting lever is noticeable when shifting from low to second gear. Are shifting forks worn or loose to cause this?? Or would it be in the gear box itself. Thanks, rradar

It is probably the detent mechanism in the shifter tower. I believe that Mac VanPelt has a rebuild kit for this problem. Contact him for information on how to repair this problem. http://www.vanpeltsales.com/index.htm

Thanks for helpful suggestion to contact the supplier. I did email them and have not yet received an answer. I wonder if anyone has a complete shifting tower to sell? This may be a possibility if I don't hear from Mac Van Pelt. rradar

Try giving him a call, he should be able to tell you what parts are required. He does have some rebuilt shift towers for sale. 1-800-299-7496

Contacted Mac Vanpelt and discussed the shifting lever problem. He has a kit available to correct the problem. It consists of 3 springs and 3 ball bearings to replace worn parts. I have ordered a kit and will install to see if this will correct the problem. He also can rebuild the shift lever mechanical internals using the original parts. This can be a solution also. Thanks again to you Tom for the referral!!

Just received a repair kit from Mac VanPelt. It has just 2 springs and 2 ball bearings. Is this going to the job or do I need one more spring and one more ball bearing? Hope to pull the shift cover and find out how many of these parts I need. Is there a procedure to do this job ? Thanks rradar

Here are the instructions for disassembling the detents. It was copied from Van Pelts transmission book. I believe that you can do the job without removing the shifter from the transmission. The kit should fix your problem unless the shifter rails are worn.
