Thanks, Ken. I was thinking that might be the case, it just seemed odd is all.

The "M" most likely was put on the paperwork to indicate Mercury. In my experience, the M was not normally part of the serial number in 1946. Others may chime in. Ken

First, let me introduce myself. I am an old guy in East Tennessee with too many projects, '29A RPU, '48 Ford Coupe and a '46 Mercury 4 door. I'm having a problem decoding the VIN for the Mercury, and I need to register it. The VIN is clearly stamped on the driver's side frame rail and the area where it is stamped shows no sign of tampering. The number on the frame corresponds to the title and registration except for not having the letter M between the last number and star. All the paperwork shows 99A 1xxxxx9M, the M being missing from the number on the frame. Has anyone ever seen anything like this, or know the significance of the M?
