Not having specific info for your '40 Merc, I do have open car experience and can offer general info for you: First and most important, until you have adequate experience and are confident you can do it alone, get an experienced helper. Tops are very expensive and are easily and quickly damaged beyond repair. Undo all exterior snaps, not forgetting the snaps on the side rails. Remove all objects stored in the (empty) top well. Unzip and properly fold the rear curtain. Unlatch the interior fabric stretchers. Disconnect the header bow from the windshield frame. If included on your model, remove the finger screws on folding side rails. On some later models these may be locking levers. Look closely for manual devices. LIft the header bow from the windshield by hand, and actuate the hydraulic valve to begin folding, manually assisting the fold as required. At any time the hydraulics seem stalled, investigate the reason without applying additional force. Fabric folds are not automatic, requiring manual assist. If the top doesn't seat itself in folded position easily, there is a problem. Go back and read the first requirement about getting an experienced helper, and don't believe him if he says you can do it alone the first time without help. Alan
