I have a 37 ford pickup that is almost ready for the road but, I am having a bad time trying to figure out the wiring. I have installed all new wiring and the headlights work. The tail lights stay on all the time and I can't get the brake light to work. I have tested the fuse block and have power there but none to the stop light circuit. The brake light switch is functions properly but still no light. I would appreciate any help on this issue simply electric circuits are not my favorite thing to do.

I assume that you still have the original cable brakes. All lights on your truck are on one fuse, so if any work, they should all work. Your brake light switch is adjustable in it's mount. The elbow of the brake pedal arm operates the switch, itself being returned to rest by the pedal return spring. you say the switch functions, so it is simply out of adjustment.

Do you have a wiring diagram for the vehicle? Do you have a multimeter to use? Disconnect the battery from the system, using the ohm meter, check the resistance of each wire from the battery negative cable to each light switch. Determine the continuity of each wire. Once you have determined that you have continuity to the brake light switch, check to make sure the switch is actually providing continuity to the wires that lead to the brake lights when the switch is closed. Check the brake light bulbs to see that they are grounded to the system. There may be a short in the wires going to the tail lights causing them to get power through another circuit. The tail light switch may be broken and not opening up the circuit when the tail lights are turned off.

You might want to check the light switch at the bottom of the steering column. If it is a new harness some of the wires may have come loose from the bakelite plate and are shorting out. Had this happen years ago. You need to make sure the wires fit tightly to the plate.

Thanks, I will try that. My tail lights still stay on all the time.

Thanks, I have done the continuity but the brake light switch is not getting power and the tail lights are on all the time. I will check it all again perhaps I missed something.

The connections are all tight.

Use a test light to check for voltage on the black wire going to the tail light at the crossover connection at the rear of the truck. If you have voltage on that wire, you may have connected the green wire coming from the switch to the black wire going to the tail lights or the manufacturer of your harness may have switched the wires. A further check for this condition would be to turn on the lights and see if there is voltage at the brake switch. Let us know what you find.
