From the time that I first got my 40 sedan, I have coated both sides of the gasket, where the distributor mounts to the timing cover, with Permatex "Form A Gasket." I am wondering if this is really necessary? It is a mess to remove the distributor, clean the hardened Permatex off of the timing cover, and install the new/overhauled one. Is it acceptable to just bolt the distributor and gasket to the timing cover with no sealant? What did Ford do at the factory? Thank you all in advance!

No sealant here. And no sealant on the water pump gaskets either, just a spot of grease to hold the gasket in place during installation.
