rustedorrotting, The carburetor in your photo is not even close to being correct for a '40 Ford.

did you find the correct carb for your ride? my Holley application chart says it should be a Holley 94 model 91-99 for a 239 v8. I have one of these ready to be rebuilt if you need one. This one has an extended throttle shaft, if you need it I can build you one with the original hand throttle.

Here's Charlie Schwendler's address. He does good work. I have my distributor into him now. He could test your coil as well. Charles Schwendler, 5845 Cole Rd. Orchard Park, N.Y. 14127

trmsr, One potential cause of your engine running problem when the engine warms up could be that your coil is failing. I have bought new coils that failed within 10 to 20 minutes! Be sure to buy a reliable coil. The cheap ones that don't live long cost about $40 or less. The ones that tend to live longer cost twice that much. Buyer beware!

Mike, My distributor has 3 mounting bolts which I understand is the 32-41 design although it's not the helmet style. I believe the 42-48 were 2 bolts, so perhaps my engine is a 1940 with an aftermarket 3 bolt crab style distributor, or am I incorrect in these conclusions and if so are there other engine details that indicate that it is not a 1940? Tom PS. Just ordered It's Ford For' 40

Thanks, there is always a chance that a problem is created inadvertently, but I did check and the firing order is correct

One more thing that might cause it to miss (and this is grasping at straws), is the spark plug wires. Very early on (and it is hard to remember, but almost five decades ago) when I first had mine we accidentally swapped two of the spark plug wires on one side (it still had modern, black rubber insulated spark plug wires at the time). It would start and idle for a while (better than you would think), but would become rough. You could feel it when driving (very unpleasant).

40 Coupe, The service replacement carb required the use of some of the linkage parts from the carb that is being replaced along with some included small parts to be selected depending on the model year you're using it on. With the correct combination everything works as it should. See blow up of instruction sheet attached.

RAK, The finish on your carburetor appears correct. The cover is from a later model. Without more photos, I can't tell whether or not the remainder of the carb is correct.

trmsr: The Carb is a much newer service replacement but it also is missing parts to make the choke function. Note the empty threaded holes on the side of the Carb. and where does the dash hand choke attach the upper choke plate can flop from open to closed. also is there a place to connect the dash hand throttle? How did you connect the throttle pedal? Instructions you have show some of the missing parts
