Can someone explain how the steering box is removed? Also wondering how the steering shaft is disconnected from the box itself? I'm not much of a mechanic but I would like to try to do the removal and install myself after the unit has been rebuilt.

If your going to send the box out for rebuild leave the steering shaft in place. The shaft has tapered roller bearings with races on each end of the worm gear. In addition there is an adjustment using gaskets as shims to preload the bearings.

Thanks for your reply. Does the shaft the steering wheel mounts to have to be pulled back to detach it from the shaft on the steering box? New territory for me!

The shaft is attached to the worm gear in the box and only comes out when the box comes apart. Make sure the column lock is not engaged and the outer tube will pull off after you loosen the clamp at the bottom of the column tube.
