My battery in my '40 Ford was dead - my trickle charger had been knocked off for who knows how long. Haven't driven for over a year. I brought over my 6 volt charger and foolishly hooked it up wrong. Forgot it had a positive ground. After a few minutes, I realized my error, hooked the charger up properly, charged the battery to 6 volts. Tried to start - nothing at all. Have I destroyed my poor car?

My hunch? Battery is shot. It doesn't matter if the car is negative ground or positive. The charger is hooked up red to positive, black to negative.

Before you buy a new battery, take it to AutoZone or NAPA and have them test it. You may have developed another problem while the car was sitting. If the battery is good, come back here for some things to try to isolate the problem.
