Topic: split rim wheels

boomer    -- 08-29-2024 @ 4:25 PM
My 47 ford 0ne ton has split rim wheels. I would like to replace them with wheels that have standard wheels. they are 17 inch wheels with 6 1/2"studs . it has 5 bolts and the studs are 3/4".
Any idea where i could get replacement wheels. It is impossible to find any one in this area of Leadville, Co. that will work on replacement on split rims.

Boomer, those rims are called Widowmakers for good reason. Did you happen to see the news article yesterday about the fatal accident involving a Delta Airliner tire explosion in the maintenance shop?

I'm no tonner expert but I don't believe the wheels on your tonner are Widow Makers. Check over on the FTE for lots of good info on split rims/Widow Makers. There is a member that goes by Truckdog 62563 who is all things about those wheels. Also lots of good tonner stuff over on the Ford Barn. One member GB Sissons is extremely knowledgeable about tonners and all things Jail Bar.

I need to know if this wheel is what is known as a widow maker.

I have a 47 Tonner with split rims, Truckdog (who knows his stuff) tells me they are not WidowMakers......

I stand corrected. Sorry for the confusion.

I should check in here too more often. The 1938 to 1947 Tonner wheels have what is called the Firestone RH type outer rims. This is not the widow maker RH-5° that has become a pariah within the service industry. But the RH does require handling by a service technician who knows them. Which is why most chain tire shops will be of no help.

Regrettably there are no bolt on replacement options. The tonner is the only road going vehicle I’ve found record of that used the 5 x 6 7/8” bolt pattern in a none military application. Even military wheels are too deeply dished to be of use. So I’d suggest finding an old independent shop, an agricultural shop, or a big truck shop. Stu
