Topic: 1932 BB Ford wheel /tire lock rings

I am restoring a 1932 BB Ford truck with 20 inch wheels . I have new tires ,but the bead lock rings for the wheels I have are in rough shape and I do not trust them . Is there any after market source for new lock rings , or a substitute ring , such as for a piece of modern machinery which can be used ? Is there any way the lock ring can be spot welded to the wheel , and still get the tire mounted ? thanks Tom

Tom - welcome to the “joy” of dealing with old big truck wheels. If you do a Google search of my user name with the word wheels you’ll find a lot has been discussed on the FTE and Ford Barn sites. There simply are no easy or cheap fixes on the older trucks. If your wheels are heavily rusted or otherwise damaged finding replacements will be needed. Even there you are facing heavy odds because slightly newer trucks than yours have a different bolt pattern. Yours has the 5 lug x 6 7/8” pattern used through 1933, where later trucks were fitted with 5 x 8” pattern wheels. Welding the ring to the rim will not work. You would damage the tire beads attempting to mount tires.

Custom new wheels built using your center discs with new one piece outer rims is the surest solution, but it’s an expensive solution. The below old FTE discussion gives a guy’s experience with this. Stu
