Topic: Steering gear end plate

DerDon    -- 01-11-2012 @ 8:13 PM
I'm finaly going back together with my '32 5W and would like to replace the steering sector housing with the later ('33- '36) end plate. (I bought one from the Obsolete Parts catalog but it is worthless.)
I'm sure this has been covered before but I've been a bit slack on my home work.
Thanks for the help.

I can't figure out what you want. Are you trying to replace the tube that keeps the oil from running out the end of the housing? The repo tubes do not fit. It is a real odd size. I have been trying to figure out how to resize some tubing to the right size. No solution yet. The best bet is to buy a scr*p box and rob the tube.

The sector housing is the part that mounts the box to the frame. The worm housing has an end plate. If you want to repair the plate with the tube that is inside the column your local hardware store may have the tube, mine did (brass about 6" long). The OD has to be small enough to insert into the column and the ID has to be large enough for the horn rod to pass through. you can drill the original end plate to let the new brass tube pass through about 3/16 " and then silver solder it to the plate on the steering box side of the plate.
