Topic: 33 top irons

  Hi all,
Well I got my new ford book and in reading I find the irons in my Cabriolet should be chrome. Presently they are painted the same color as the top. So how does one go about taking them apart as there are what appears to be large rivets at several joints, I am sure I can drill/grind and remove but what about reassembly?

Thank you,
Chris

Whether it's a '32 or a '33, the answer is: take lots of photos so that the irons are assembled in the same order they were taken apart (what attaches to what and what overlays what, what the rivet heads look like, etc.) and sketches will help also.

It would likely be better to drill out the rivets rather than grind off the heads as you are less likely to damage the top iron pieces in the area immediately surrounding the rivets. Measure each rivet and note if any they are step rivets with a shoulder on their shanks. Your best bet would be stainless steel for the replacement rivets and perhaps some duplicates of the originals could be obtained from Big Flat Rivets, etc., although I suspect that you will end either making or having made most of them. Some platers will actually do all of this for you (disassembly, make the required rivets, and re-assembly), but I suspect that there are only a handful of them these days.

Another way to avoid mistakes is to only take apart one side at a time.

It is a bit tricky to re-rivet the irons without cracking the chrome plating around the rivet and one way to minimize the chances of that happening is to use faux rivets wherein one side of the rivet is created with a slender shank and the other side with a hole in the end of the shank a few thousands larger than the slender shank and pressing the two pieces together using Loctite. This is just like the shock absorber link faux rivets that Roy Nacewicz (nertman@aol.com) makes (they really work once you master the process of installing them).
