Topic: 32 Fuel Gauge

The fuel gauge on my 32 5w is missing the plug at the top of the glass tube, some of the metal is corroded, and someone put sealer all over the flex tube. Are repros of these available or does anyone rebuild these?

Neither at the present time, at least to my knowledge.

The plug at the top is used for storage only, it has to be removed to connect the hydrostatic line to the gauge. carefully remove any crud on the outside of the small tube between the rear hex shaped tank and the glass viewing glass. The careful use of a chemical would be good to remove any tar or such. if the substance is not tar then the careful use of toilet bowl cleaner on a cotton swab and follow up with lots of water. Wear eye protection and do not get the cleaner inside the gauge face. In order for the gauge to work the small tube between the rear tank and the glass viewing glass has to be open so the red fluid can travel back and forth. You want to be very careful not to kink this tube closed.

Apparently originally on top of the glass tube on the fuel gauge it had a small bit of felt fitted, on my gauge I sat a small piece of nitrile rubber with a stainless steel pin in the centre of it just protruding enough into the glass tube, the top of the glass tube is rough enough to allow the tube to vent and it helps to stop the fluid from evaporating.
I also made up a rubber disc with a knob on it which I fit inside the chrome bezel on top of the glass face which I fit when I am not driving the car, so the fluid will tend not to discolour to clear, with sunlight.
