Anyone who can help smoothing out one of these? It loads up and blows black smoke, too rich? This is on a 32 v-8. When we put a 2 barrel manifold on, she purrs.

First, do the two vanes in the center section of the carburetor move up and down freely? If not, the carburetor will act like the choke is fully closed and the fuel air mixture will be excessively rich.

Second, if the vanes move freely, the problem may be with the setting of the metering pin at the top of the carburetor (the brass shaft at the top center of the carburetor with the "T" handle). The initial setting for this pin is to turn it clockwise until it contacts the vanes and they just start to open then back off the pin five full turns counter-clockwise. Any subsequent adjustment of this metering pin (seldom required) should be done with the engine at normal operating temperature.

Third, the initial throttle plate opening should be .020".

Fourth, the float level should be 1 3/16" plus or minus 1/16"

If the carburetor conforms to all of the above and still exhibits the problem, it should be disassembled and properly cleaned paying close attention to the instructions contained in the September-October, 1932 Service Bulletin, copies of which are readily available in inexpensive reprint form.
