Topic: 32 fuel gauge air line

I am installing one of the new reproduction fuel/air lines in my 32 5W. Am I correct in assuming that the small conical fitting for the air line ends must be soldered on after trimming for length and not crushed on like the fuel line ferrule? What supports / attaches the air line after it passes thru the dash grommet untill it attaches to the fuel gauge? Does it just hang out in space unsupported? Thanks

You are correct. The small conical fitting(s) must be soldered on as it must be air tight. The small tube can be attached to the speedometer cable to support it on the way to the gas gauge. Good luck!

If your fuel/air line is a Mike McKennett reproduction, it is made of copper-plated steel tubing like the original. Both the air line ferrules and the fuel line ferrules should be soldered on the tubing, as was done originally. The copper plating is thin and won't 'crush' sufficiently to achieve a leak-proof seal of the fuel lines.

You mention trimming the air line. If it's Mike's reproduction, it is made to Ford's engineering drawings and it should not be trimmed as it is the correct length to begin with.

The air line was not attached between the dash (firewall) and the gauge. Being made of steel, no additional support was required. If your car is a V-8, the air line is on the opposite side of the car from the speedometer cable.
