what is the correct way to install the tack strip insert/seal? Is it glued in place, pressed in or what? Whatever the correct way, is weather strip sealer used in the channel before installing seal? Thanks for any suggestions or insight into this project.

Bud, Once the top insert fabric is tacked in place, you should seal the edge of the fabric and the tack heads with sealer. I use #3 Robertson flat head screws to attach the steel channel as the next step (they are a lot easier to control than tacks which carry the risk of chipping the paint on the steel channel). The screw heads should then be sealed. The last step is the installation of the rubber insert into the metal channel which need not be glued in, but you could do so if you wish. Following these steps should prevent any water intrusion around the edges of the fabric top insert.

How securely the tack strip is held depends on obtaining the correct size of strip and the condition of the metal surrounding the top opening. In most cases, the tack strip area is full of rust gaps from water intrusion, and the wood frame is in poor condition, particularly the front portion. Unless, and until, the preparation of the area is repaired, installing the top, itself, can't be done properly. I learned that the "hard way" in my Model A days.
