Topic: V8 Logo Painted?

Dream38v8    -- 08-16-2016 @ 2:48 PM
I noticed the V8 logo on my '38 Fordor Deluxe Sedan hubcaps and grille are painted. I believed they were painted using a brush by a previous owner. The paint is wearing off. I'm wanting to keep the car as close to original detail as possible. Was the hubcap V8 symbol paint black, Ford blue or not at all? I've seen pictures of the hubcaps with either black or blue. Searching the web today I believe the V8 symbol was not painted. Which is correct? I could locate no information on the grill V8. I've attached a picture, of the grille, for reference.

  Ray;
Believe me the hubcaps were painted. Depending on what year - 32 to 35 were corporate blue (V-8 or FORD). 1936-37 color depended on the whether it was a standard or deluxe. I believe 1938 V-8 was corporate blue. Now I am only talking about the stainless parts of the hubcap. (come on Alan, here's your chance to let us know)
The background of the grille emblems were corporate blue. The raised area was not painted. Later years, like 1940, the emblem and hood latch were painted body color. (how do I know? I have an original 1940 hood latch that my grandfather broke off and it is painted maroon)

If I am incorrect, there will be others to let us know.

Ray, The '38 DeLuxe center grille bar V8 (only) is blue. The trunk lid key lock cover has a Ford script, with the background painted this same blue. Testers model paint is as good as it gets for the correct color blue, and flows well with a small brush. The hubcap main color as well as the V8 is body color. The Standard hubcap main body and V8 is black. Note: If you have spider hubcaps, they were an approved accessory, and came with no color at all.

Thanks Alan. I will correct the grille (V8) and trunk key lock cover colours this winter. As for the hubcaps I believe the '38's are spyder. If that is the case I'll remove the black paint. Attached is a pic of my spyder(?) hubcap.

I really appreciate the forum feedback. As a V8 novice I have much to learn as I enjoy the '38. The forum has been a great resource to assist a rookie like myself.

Ray, Your hubcap picture is not definitive enough to determine if it is a spider, as it is too dark, so I'll describe a spider to you: The outside diameter is scalloped, and as large as the wheel diameter, the scallops matching the cutouts of the wheel. There are three styles of the spider, being 1936; 1937; and 1938/1939.

For answers to more questions than you can think of, go to the online store of this website, and purchase the book entitled "The 1938-39 Ford Book", written and published by the Early Ford v8 Club. I have bragging rights on the book, my '38 being on the cover.

And Ray, please don't drive on those very old tires!

Alan, thanks for that great spyder description. I have the standard V8 hubcaps, but I wish I had the spyder. I've attached a better hubcap pic. I am a little confused as to the hubcap painting. Since the body colour is black only the V8 portion of the hubcap is painted black. Correct?

The 1938-39 Ford book is on my birthday wishlist. As for the tires I am well aware of the side wall issue. The car will be put up for storage shortly. Tires will be the first thing next spring.

Ray, Again due to picture quality, I'm not certain, but it does look like your hubcap is DeLuxe, not Standard. Terminology here is a bit complicated, as the term Standard was not to be used, by the same reasoning that soft drinks at a fast food restaurant are never sized as Small, Medium, & Large. So, with that in mind, there was the Ford V8, and then there was the DeLuxe Ford V8. Your hubcap is DeLuxe, as is your car, judging from the center grille bar.

The V8 and the outer rim of the hubcap is to be body color on the Deluxe, and black on the fordV8.
How about a picture of this old Kentucky Ford before you put 'er away?

Alan, yes I have a Deluxe (85hp with Fenton headers / duals). A pic is attached. So much to learn it is exciting. The wheel dressing is in two pieces (hubcap and outer trim ring). The hubcap and not the outer trim ring is multi layered. The V8 is in a smaller diameter section than the our rim (all on the hubcap). It is this outer hubcap rim that you mentioned needs to be black + the V8. Correct?

Ray, Now that's the picture I was looking for! Pretty car! Yes, the outer separate ring is called the trim ring. Everything looks correct as it shows in that picture.

A suggestion now about the tires you will eventually get... Do not just automatically buy whitewalls just because. Consider blackwalls as well, and then get what appeals to you most. My reason is this: Back in the day, whitewalls were not so important as milk for baby. Coker has both, in an original tread pattern. Some will say radials are best, but I disagree, and run bias ply tube tires. And before you buy tires, have a plan as to how you will balance them.

Thanks Alan. I believe I have it all figured out thanks to you.

The car was stored and barely driven by the previous owner (14 years). According to the records provided the car underwent a frame off restoration between 1998 and 2002. It took me two days to clean off accumulation of dust. The more I cleaned the better the car seems both inside and out. The only issue I discover outside of normal maintenance issues has been the chrome / stainless passenger side front windshield molding. To me I found a hidden gem.
