  I used the rustoleum rust dissolver to help free a valve in my flathead. All parts were removed from the block except that one valve (previous post). Valve was stuck closed, but not completely. I turned the block and poured in the rust dissolver in from the bottom of the valve. The rust dissolver then dribbled out the valve seat, and down the cylinder wall. Now there is a black stripe down the cylinder wall that won't come out. I used some black scotchbrite with no luck. I read the post by old henry using it on his tin snips. I assume the cylinder wall has been etched by the rust dissolver, and the stripe is there to stay. Is this correct?

  tommy, what is your concern? I don't think the wall has been compromised in any way. I think despite the black stripe your rings will seal fine. What's the label on the rust dissolver say is in it that would etch cast iron? As for the stripe being there to stay once you run the engine I would bet it will go away.

  Thanks woodiewagon46..I guess I just thought it was odd that it wouldn't wipe clean. Still have to have the block checked out anyway to make sure it is good.

  Hello...I disagree with the statement that the block has not been compromised in any way. If I were you, I would certainly have the cylinder bores honed to clear them of any discoloration, as an acid has certainly affected the one bore wall. You don't want to go to all the trouble of complete reassembly only to find one cylinder won't have the same compression as the other seven. Do it right! BT
