  Have a 1953 Ford with a bad spindle. Need to get the old spindle off the car. Can the kingpin be removed from the spindle while it is on the car? If so, how is this done? Is there a puller/pusher available to do this or is a big hammer and a punch suitable?

  Not sure about a '53, but you can remove the pin on the earlier cars. The pin is held in with a lock bolt on the early cars and I suspect it may be the same for the later ones. Once the lock bolt is removed the pin can be driven out

  On the '53 there is a locking pin that retains the kingpin to the spindle. The locking pin which has a head on one side appears to have been driven into the spindle to form a press fit. Specifically my questions are: what is required to remove this locking pin and can it be done on the car or does the whole upright assembly have to be removed from the car to remove the locking pin?

  remove the hub, brake backing plate, remove lock bolt, take an impact driver, air preferred, and drive upward

  carcrazy, send me a PM with your e-mail. I may be able to scan the instructions from the '52-'54 shop manual and e-mail them to you. Just for info you can buy the same shop manual from Amazon for about $22.

  Trjford8, thank you for the offer. I already have the 1952 and 1953 shop manuals. The manual simply states, "Drive the spindle locking pin from the spindle". I have removed the spindle, king pin, and spindle support from the car as an assembly and will take them to the local machine shop to have the locking pin removed.
