The cone shaped springs that go between the door and the door panel face which way, pointy side towards the door or toward the door panel?

I believe that the small spring end goes toward the door panel. The small end would then support the round end of the door handle and the window crank handle without damaging the panel. Large end towards the door panel. The large end spreads out the pressure against the door panel and the escutcheon. Using the small end against the handle does not allow the escutcheon to fit tight against the panel.
