Have a top loader transmission with following number stamped on it A288326, was attached to a '38 or '39 V8. Understand that that number would be the vehicle serial number, what year would that be, feel certain the engine is a '38 or '39

You can find the serial numbers here: http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/flathead_serialnumbers.htm I think the "A" is actually a "4". Serial numbers starting with A were for the Model A, 1928-31. You are missing a star at each end of the number and an "18" prefix for the number.

Charlie, so looking at Vanpelts page, this number of mine would be 18-4,288326 and that would fall under " '38 Ford V8 85 HP 81A serial range 18-4. 186,447-18-4,661,00 " however that line is tagged with f) In the 1938 model year Ford changed from the 21 stud 85hp V8 to the 24 stud engine. The change occurred with #18-4,380,120 on November 24, 1937.
The engine it came off was a 24 stud 3 1/16 and so it doesn't fall after the 4,380,120 number, but perhaps this transmission was added to the engine during a rebuild by Ford as the engine has a rebuilding plate on the bell housing. So it looks like the transmission is in fact from a '38
