Hi, I have a Merc 255 with auto choke. Just rebuilt it, started it, and it seems to idle fine, but when I step on the accelerator the engine chokes itself to the point of shutoff. And it sounds like its either blowing or sucking air. I changed the accelerator pump to the old one and it does the same thing. Any suggestions?

The top cover is probably not on correctly and not sealing. When you install the top cove and are ready to insert the 5 screws Try and push down on cover and try to rock it front to back if it rocks even slightly its NOT on right.These covers are a bit*hTo get on correctly. Its hanging up somewhere under the cover and you cant see where it does.I gave up rebuilding these because of this problem. Some took me hours to get it seated right. Sorry to burst your bubble.
