I've seen brown but mostly black. What is the importance (if any) for the color difference. Thanks
Ken

Ken, The brown color of coils and caps are preferred by some, myself included, but are no more significant than the black. The one thing about them is that Ford endeavored to match cap colors, and of course, coil tops and bases were the same color. There was no effort to match caps and coils, however.

Edit: Wait a minute... you said 59AB. I was speaking of the earlier distributor mount coils, not the later head mounts, of which I cannot offer a positive opinion. Sorry.

Alan

  I think the brown was a 1940 FORD,and maybe 1941,
this is what I have been told, or read it somewhere,
I never saw one on a 1937 to 1939 car or truck
my 3 cents worth,37RAGTOPMAN
I think you could g either way with out losing judging points, if that is what you are worried about,
but I would check the V8 FORD JUDGING RULES to be sure, this way you would be certain,

Coil colors for the 1946-48 Ford cars with the 59A/B engines with coils mounted on bracket mounted to intake manifold came in various colors depending on year of production and weather the coil was replaced at some point with an earlier or later year coil. 1946 cars had combinations of black and brown or tan and all black or all brown. 1947-48 coils were most often all black. A Ford script appeared on top of coil head on genuine Ford units.

Thanks Everyone, Especially 42fordconv, Your comments make perfect sense. Brown early and black later through the production cycle. So the 42 also had the top coil bracket as did the later years?
