Hi all, I own tre 1934 Fords. One, a Sedan, has a rebuilt 59L block engine assembled with all new parts including an Isky Max1 cam, Sharp heads, Thickson manifold with dual 97‘s, Mallory electronics and dual exhaust with Fenton headers. I would like to install a gear box with overdrive - 4 or 5 speed, understanding that I have to fabricate adapters in both ends to make it work. Does any of you have a suggestion for a gear box that is short enough and suitable in general to fit in? Regards, Christer

I'll offer a little general information. The least invasive way to add overdrive is a conversion like the Mitch*ll Overdrive that is added into the torque tube of your car. (I tried to include a link to Mitch*ll but it didn't work) Your transmission remains, so if you are looking for fully synchronized transmission it misses that mark. The only other OD transmission that doesn't require alteration to the center of the frame is a four speed OD from mid 80's Ford pickup and some cars. Thank you 40cpe I looked at the Mitch*ll Overdrive, but I would rather just install an overdrive transmission. I could be without full synchronizing, but that comes std. with an overdrive unit. I simply would like to keep engine speed down. You mentioned a transmission from a Ford pick up and some cars - can you be more specific? Regards, Christer

If you don't mind converting to an open driveshaft, you can use a Borg-Warner T5 five-speed with overdrive fifth gear built in. There are bell housing adapters available to get it to bolt up to your engine.

The mid-'80s transmission is a T-176. This is a link to the adapter to the torque tube. http://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=197545 You will have to shorten your torque tube and drive shaft a couple of inches.
