While driving started to here a violent noise what steamed to be on rotation. Then l realized my speedometer needle was jumping back and forth. So I thought I had a problem with the speedometer cable and disconnected the cable housing from the back of the speedometer. The noise stopped and I continued to drive with the cable still connected to the transmission watching the cable end spin in the housing and still no noise. Thinking it must be a cable issue I cleaned and lubricated cable and housing with graphite. Reconnected to speedometer and noise came back. Is it likely the speedometer head is the problem !!!

The speedometer sounds as if it needs some oil. If you were to remove the speedo from the vehicle on the rear casting is a very small cup. If you pry the cup out you can place a few drops of high quality light oil (like gun oil) in the hole and then connect a hand drill in reverse rotation (an short piece of old speedo cable works well for connection) rotate the speedometer. You can also lube the end of the speedo where the cable connects with a drop of oil. Replace the lube cup and the speedo when the rotation seems good.
