Topic: Horn wont turn off.

I was troubleshooting a non working horn on my 51 Custom and found a bad relay. Replaced the relay and also replaced the horn wire going up through the steering column. When I went to put the horn button back on, as soon as I got close to the steering wheel, the horn started honking and stayed on until I pulled the horn button back away from the wheel. It seems like the horn wire is sticking out too far from the center of the steering wheel, or the contact plate is too close. Is there a fix for this or am I missing something?

  Two thoughts ...........

Has the large coil spring mounted in between the steering wheel and the back of your horn ring got sufficient tensile strength to keep the horn ring pushed out far enough to prevent contact being made ?

Should there be some kind of rubber or foam insulator pad in between the steering wheel and the back of your horn ring? If the answer to that question is yes, and yours is old and dried up, it might not be capable of doing its job.

Recommend first, disconnect battery before putting horn ring back as its live and the minute to work on putting it back a little twist here and there you are grounding it and horn blows. Before doing that I agree with grant, you need rubber cushion on the rim sos not to ground out horn, Dennis carpenter might be able to help you. I just finished my horn problem on my 41 and I know yours is slightly different but in general, you need rubber cushion of some kind. John
