Is there any difference between a 42 & 46 distributor besides the cap and rotor.

The cap on the '42 is held on by two spring clips. The cap on the '46-48 is held on by a wire bale. You can convert one to the other by changing these.

You will also have to replace the rotor when swapping caps.
