Topic: Wet Stromberg

My 40 Convert sat for a while, infrequently used before I bought it. Gradually working through some bugs. While driving this weekend, the engine just stopped. Thankfully in my driveway. When I opened the hood, there was gas wetness not usually seen on the linkage side of the carb and around the base. I waited a few minutes and it started again.(Although not easily as is usually the case) While driving ( with and escort) car seemed to sometimes run out of gas, never shutting off, but hesitating slightly. Can anyone shed any light on this Stromberg phenomenon? Original 97. Thanks

  40 fords use a Ford-Holley 94 , 91-99. Ford stopped using 97's in late 38. ken ct.

Ken ct, I checked at noon, and can now see difference. Googled both as a "cheat". Can you comment on my running problem and new wetness around linkage side and base? Which now has gone away.... Is this a simple case better to just rebuild than wonder? suggestions for rebuilder or it something a careful conscientious guy could do?

The Stromberg may work for you but as pointed out is not correct for the 1940. It would appear the input valve may be leaking excess fuel into the float bowl. This could be caused by the valve itself or high fuel inlet pressure, or the float level may be set too high. If your Carb is a 94 Ford Holley beside the above the power valve may be leaking fuel from the float bowl into the engine causing very hard restart as well as delayed initial starts because the float bowl is always empty. Very poor running and fouled spark plugs. If you have a Stromberg Max Musgrove in UT is the repair man for Stromberg. If you have a 94 Charlie Schwendler is the repair man. See the V8 Times ad section for Charlies contact or Stromberg web page for Max info. Look the carb over carefully and note info embossed into the zinc die cast body to determine exactly what you have.
