Need to settle a debate! When dropping a convert top on '35-'40 Fords you first unhook the rear window. Failure to do so will run the risk of cracking the window. True or false?

  Tom,

I don't drop the window on my '36 Roadster when lowering the top. Cannot speak for other models.

Thanks Ken for the reply. I suspected that was the case.

  Tom,

fairly new to this car, but the top on my 40 folds nicely without any window hassle. For the record, anyone know the "correct" way to fold the top as its being lowered. New top, Old car... don't want to wear a hole or abrade the top with the bows. Currently it seems to naturally fold but... "where it goes isn't necessarily where its supposed to be".

Here's a summary of what Fords Top Lowering Instructions show regarding lowering the rear window:

35-36 Cabriolet.......YES
35-36 Conv Sedan....???
35-36 Phaeton..........NO
35-36 Roadster.........YES
36 Club Cabriolet......YES
37 Conv Sedan...........YES

I stop lowering the top as it is being done to check the folds between the bows to be sure the top fabric isn't being pinched between the irons. The window panel should drop down into the top well out of danger. The biggest threat to lowering a top is forgetting to release all the snaps along the sides. If you forget one, it is likely the snap will be torn off and out of the tab. Don't ask how I know that!

  Don-

If I understand your chart you are saying that the rear window must be dis-attached from the top before lowering it. If this is the correct procedure, reversing the process would mean the window goes up after the top is anchored back up which is somewhat cumbersome given the weight of the glass. No shortcuts to this?

Thanks for the help.

Tom, I think that you have to do what works for you. I was just presenting what Ford's Top Lowering books illustrated.

Just read the lowering instruction book for our 1938 conv. coupe...it said to lower the glass,I'm sure not going to take a chance of breaking it, it would be really hard to replace it,

Flatheadfan, I think that Ford sort of acknowledged the rear window weight issue when they went to a taller rear glass in mid 35 and after. They specified that all 6" high glass be thinner than the 4" high glass. 4" glass had been specified to be 1/4" thick while 6" glass was to be .162 or 5/32" thick.

'39 convertible top lowering instruction #3; Unsnap fasteners around back curtain (Window) and drop into package tray. This is after #1, lowering the door glass and #2, unsnapping the 4 fasteners located above the door glass.
