Topic: 1936 Steering column question

forJJ    -- 06-07-2016 @ 5:17 PM
I am re-wiring my 1936, and I am not sure if I am missing something. At the end of the steering column, the wires are really close to the exhaust. Is there a boot or something to protect it? If so, can I get a part number? I didn't see anything in the book.

thanks

Jason

Jason, Page 155 of The 35-36 Book describes an Asbestos Sheath that protects the wiring coming out of the bottom of the switch assembly. I'm not aware of any vendor that supplies this item. It is a light grey/white color with a coarse weave. Here's a photo of it. I managed to take one off an old harness and install it on a new one.

Thanks! I'm thinking about something like this:
http://www.amazon.com/SUNDELY%C2%AE-Thermal-Shield-Protector-Insulator/dp/B01CY8D8XQ?ie=UTF8&keywords=wire%20heat%20shield&qid=1465430518&ref_=sr_1_51&s=automotive&sr=1-51

I just wanted to make sure I was on the right track. I figured there was something missing.

They would make a good replacement for the original if the ID is large enough. I have a feeling they are a bit too small, being for a spark plug. I believe Speedway may have something similar

  Jason-

What I have done is make a simple heat shield and use an existing frame hole to bolt things together. Simple and it works.

They make an exhaust wrap material for headers that might work for you. You can usually find it at a local speed shop. I've used it on headers that come close to a steering box. Check Summit Racing's on-line catalog and type in "exhaust wrap" in the search box.

Hi Everyone, Early in my Judging career (like five years ago, haha), Dave Collette was my Deputy and he schooled me to watch for that asbestos sheath as it is frequently MIA.

forJJ, please try to let us know how you handle this? Thanks!
