My 1940 Ford Conv,Radio Will Play Sometimes And Most of The Time Will Not Play . The Radio Has Been Restored and I Am Using A Dennis Carpender Convertible Antenna. Sometimes I Can Take Hold Of The Antenna Near The Rear View Mirror And Move It Back And Forth To Get It To Play. Has Anyone Had The Similar Problem, And How Did You Repair It. THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR ANY HELP I RECEIVE. 06-05-16 21jimmie

It has been a couple of decades since I sold my '40 convert but as I recall the part you are holding on to goes from the radio, through a hole in the mirror bracket, up to the knob you turn to put the antenna up or down. I think the part is actually two parts, one of which slides inside of the other and is spring loaded. The top part has a point that rests in a detent or the shaft between the knob on the inside and the antenna on the outside. The spring lets you turn the knob. Seems like that connection is a likely place you are losing the signal. Either the spring is too weak or the point of connection is dirty. Or, maybe when you grab the antenna your body becomes a better antenna and that's when you hear the radio. It's also possible that the little plastic insulator that the bottom piece slides into inside the nut that is under the plastic cover has broken and is allowing the antenna to ground until you wiggle it.

Another place to look is where the antenna plugs into the top of the radio. It is just a slide connection that may be dirty or the compression of the female plug to the male antenna may be loose???
