I need suggestions timing a modified 286 ci 59A w/ a Mallory dist.using a vacuum guage. I've tried a couple of methods but still get carbonned up plugs very quickly. Thanks.

Your problem is probably in the carburetor(s). Your mixture is too rich probably due to a fuel leak in the carburetor. Check to see that the power valve gaskets are not leaking and that you have the correct power valves for your carburetion. If you have a racing grind camshaft, your vacuum will be lower than stock, so you will need a power valve that will stay closed at the lower readings. Tom
