I am looking for a new bumper for a 1934 Ford pickup. Where can I get a quality one? Is chrome better than stainless? Is it better to get the old one re-chromed? If so than where can it be re-chromed? Thank You

It all depends on your ultimate desire. Do you want "concourse correct". If so, stainless is out of the question. Not certain how good the repop bumpers are that are offered for your '34. I do know repop bumpers sold for '40 Ford cars can be spotted 50' away. Incorrect radius, missing ribs on the back, poor quality plating plus, made from cheap cold rolled steel, they don't have the strength that the original "spring steel" offered. But, cheaper than plating an original and I suppose for guys on a budget that really don't care about authenticity and / or quality, a good choice. So, to reiterate... If it is simply for a driver, I'd guess you'd be okay with a repop bumper. Still, you may want to get some feedback on the quality. Properly replating your original will cost about $400 - $500.

The Bumper Boys sell bumpers that have been replated to driver quality and you may be able to ind a local shop that will do the plating for you. Google "chrome plating" and your zip code or state to find one close to you. Tom

You asked where to get something chromed without including your general location? If you live in Florida a good place in California is probably not very useful. The guys in Florida won't spend their time posting a location of a good chrome shop because they assume you live in California. Why don't you update your post to include your general location and also include it in your profile? It is definitely better to be able to inspect you bumper when you pick it up. With the cost of shipping it is much better to deal across the counter. My first choice would be to rechrome an original bumper. It is correct and probably much better steel. Is there any chance the "theme" of your truck is such that you could paint the bumper black? I have a '31 RDPU. With black headlight and taillight buckets, a black windshield frame, a black radiator sh*ll and black wire wheels I could just about get away with black bumpers and have if look like it came that way. I don't have any personal experience with Bumper Boys but suggest you look them up with a search on HAMB, http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/ There are a lot of posts about them on HAMB and most of them aren't very positive. A final thought, you should check your copy (if you don't have one you should get one) of the club's "Restoration Guidelines", https://www.earlyfordv8.org/Shop.cfm?id=17&pid=2 . I don't have a copy but assume it shows the correct bumper (some of the guidelines come up a little short on the commercial vehicles). It looks like, based on pictures in "The Early Ford V8 As Henry Built It" the bumper is different from the passenger car and painted black.
