I have a mechanic replacing my 239 with a Merc 255. The first thing he noticed was that the transmission is not going to work with existing. Can the 239 tranny be used here? Also, he said that there's a some kind of plate that has to be used in order to make it usable as well. The replacement motor is a 1953 Merc, into a 1952 Mainline. Thanks. It would help if you give us the year of your car.

The blocks are identical. The Merc uses a bell housing adapter that allows it to be mated to the earlier transmission or to the Mercury transmission. The Ford uses a different bell housing. Your mechanic need to remove the bell housing from your old engine and replace the Mercury bell housing with it. Tom
