Topic: gear lube for '39 ford steering gear

Is there a suitable gear lube that is a grease rather than gear oil, that can be used in the steering gear of a '39 Ford, to minimize leakage? If so, what is the name of the product and where can it be purchased?

The best in my opinion is John Deere Corn Head Grease. I use it in my '41 box and no leakage. It used to leak out at lease half of the regular lube every year. I did have a bit of leakage when I first used Corn Head until all the old lube was pushed out. Have had it in the box for 3 years now. I made a grease fitting which I can remove and put the old plug back on for authenticity.

Sorry, just noticed you asked where to buy Corn Head. Most tractor supply stores carry it and you can also buy online.

I tried TSC(Tractor Supply Company) and they do not carry it. I had to go directly to a John Deere dealer. It's not expensive, but JD was the only one that carried it.

Determine where exactly is the leak. If the sector shaft, change the seal. If behind the light switch remove the end plate and silver solder the crack in the tube running inside the steering shaft. Note what it says on the fill plug and fill with EP (extreme pressure) heavy gear oil. Filling with grease does nothing to correct the problem, it's just a cover up and an ineffective lube for a steering box.

I use John Deere Corn Head Grease too. I had to go to a John Deere dealer to get it, but here it is on Amazon. http://www.greenfarmparts.com/John-Deere-Corn-Head-Grease-AN102562-p/an102562.htm

1934 Ford's since 1972

Do you know how much grease goes in there? I'm guessing I put about a third of a tube or so in.

  How much did you use?

How much to use depends on how empty the steering box is of the original lube. I used a little over a 1/4 of the tube. Then the left over regular lube leaked out of the bad gasket over a few months. I then "topped" off with about 4 pumps more of Cornhead.
