I am about to install a set of stock cast iron cylinder heads on a 1953 Ford V-8 engine. I will be using new cylinder head bolts for the installation and have a few questions. Is it best to use a thread sealer on the bolts where they thread into the water jackets to prevent possible leaks? Is Permatex #2 non-hardening sealer suitable? What is the maximum torque to use when installing the bolts with the sealer? Thank you for any wisdom or information you can provide.

Go to Vanpelt Sales LLc on the internet. They have a table with every bolt torque for every Ford from 49 to 53. The answer to your question is 65-70 ft/lbs. I would not use a sealer. I would use an anti-seize compoun d (any car store)

Anti-seize compound will change the toque values. Some tests have shown that you must use 35% less and other tests show 20% less. I would not use anti-seize on head bolts or any other fasteners that depend upon clamping force to seal. I would use new bolts with the rolled threads. Mac Van Pelt sells them. Tom
