Topic: heater disassembly

40 Ford heater is leaking and I need to take out the core for repair. Does the ivory colored knob require removal from the defrost control to remove the shroud? I do not want to destroy a very good original knob if I can avoid it. Old timers is kicking in because I have removed the core in years past and don't remember the procedure. How is the knob removed or am I going about this wrong?

I'm not sure if your heater is like the ones used in 41 and 42. I'm pretty sure it is similar. If so the rod that controls the defroster has a spring loaded end over a ball so it can be disconnected there to remove the front. If you still need to remove the knob the one on mine was threaded and just unscr*w*d.

Hope this helps

  Ted,
Thank you for the information. I will take the knob off and proceed. I was not sure if it pulled off or not. The heaters are almost the same.

The knob unscrews from the rod. It is easier to remove the knob and then separate the halves of the case than to disconnect the rod from the defroster link.

Then you can separate the 2 halves of the case, then remove the screws holding the clamps that fit around the pipes and remove the clamps. Remove the defroster tubes. The back half of the case should now come off of the core.
