I recently purchased a 37 transmission that had been stored for years..Opening the top cover the gears turn freely, no teeth missing, putting the cover back the gears do not go into position. Could the problem be in the forks..maybe frozen..are they suppose to move freely when shifting. Any help appreciated.

The forks should be in the middle of their travel fore and aft and the first and reverse sliding gear centered on its shaft in neutral. Also check the snychronizer hub to ensure that it is its neutral position. With those precautions, the cover should fit back on without a hitch.
