Topic: Spam on the Page

TonyM    -- 04-20-2016 @ 11:11 PM
There has been a couple instances of spam on this web page since the rebuild. Not too horrible but spam just the same. It is my suggestion that this page be limited exclusively to members of the Early Ford V-8 Club of America. I see no reason why non members should be allowed on this forum. Perhaps we can make a change.

Limiting postings only to Club members would chase away some potential Club members. I would like it to stay open to anyone that is registered. With the new registration requirements, it should be easy to revoke the spammer's registration.

I am 100% against limiting the site to Early Ford V8 Club members only. This cure would be worse than the disease. Open access to this site brings more people into the hobby, more activity to the site, and non club members may have answers to questions that club members don't have. I am sure there are a lot of people out there that have a one time only question that wouldn't spend the time and money to join the Early Ford V8 Club just to get the answer. Then there will be the guy that just inherited a '32 roadster from his grandfather and wants to sell it, should we drive him away to a hot rod site?

Just a suggestion, but I really don't think that this page drives tons of membership. Non members come on here, get their answer and we never see them again.

One thing is certain: there was no spam on here until the page was changed. I administer several pages on the internet and the pages where access is limited there is virtually NO spam.

I agree--don't want to drive people to the hot rod pages. This page is so sleepy anyways. I guess we need the excitement. Hope we can keep the spam to minimum and at the same time preserve unfettered access.

Please be aware that the web hosting company and the web administrator work effortlessly to keep the Forum as topic orientated as possible.
Occasionally, sometimes entries slip past.
Remember, they have to register, and go through the CAPTCHA (that letter and special character entry that was not received well by current members).
This proves that a physical person is entering these.

Again, we appreciate your notifications of items and topics that you feel do not represent the purpose of this Forum.

Tony, last week there were two hacks advertising for a moving company. I let the web administrator know and he took care of it right away. Keep him informed and he will remove them quickly. Can't ask for more than that.

I would like to suggest that a "button" be added to the layout of the page to "report" spam (and other inappropriate things).

TomO and Charlie, you're right---keep it open, but it is really unfortunate that some one has begun to litter our nice page. I come here every day and really enjoy reading the answers and advice from our very knowledgeable members.

Tony, there has always been some spam even on the old site. I monitored it every day and notified Bruce of the spam. He immediately removed it. That may be why you didn't notice spam on the old site. I'm sure others also notified him and that kept it to a minimum. Unfortunately we all get junk in our e-mail that our spam filter does not catch. It's a never ending problem and up to us to catch and report it to help the web master.
