When rebuilding a flathead, would you prefer a new old cam gear with fiber or a new one made to today's specs??????

They say the metal gear is more noisy than the fiber gear. I can't hear it above all of the other noises, so I prefer its durability over the fiber gear.

Agree with TomO. The increased reliability is a pretty good trade off for a little bit more noise, which is hardly noticeable.

I'm not totally sure I understand just what you mean by "to today's specs???" and exactly who's specifications you are referring to since I can purchase timing gears being manufactured today in either fiber or aluminum. What I can tell you is that some offshore repro fiber gears, being sold today by some of the big name suppliers, are not being made to the same material specs of the original Ford timing gears.
After I had a premature failure of a repro fiber timing gear about 5 years ago, in less than 2000 miles on a newly rebuilt engine, I switched to an aluminum timing gear that now has 26,000 trouble free miles. I can't verify the old tale of making more noise than a fiber gear, and quite frankly, I could care less about a little additional noise that I can't hear anyway. The only timing gear that I would even consider using now is an aluminum gear.
