Problem - Unable to remove the glove box lock assembly from the dash. A stainless steel cap is pressed on to the push button and its diameter won't let it drop down through the hole in the dash. How is the cover removed without damaging the dash paint or the cover? Is there a way to maneuver the latch to allow it to be removed?

I think you need to provide a picture. What you have described looks nothing like the Ford version. That has a push button with a key slot in the top of it surrounded by stainless steel sleeve that actually fits in the hole. If I remember correctly you remove a couple of screws from the underside and the whole assembly drops out of the dash.

Seems the bezel is too large to allow the lock to drop down.

I own a '42 Mercury & the glove box lock can be tricky to remove. It's been a while but I know it can be removed without disassembling the stainless cap. Keep fussing with it & it will happen I must backup & look at mine, don't remember the large bezel.. This message was edited by 42merc on 4-6-16 @ 11:58 PM

My '42 has the large bezel. Try turning & tipping the latch, it will come out.

I was able to get the assembly out. Don't have a clue how. It just decided through a variety of move arounds came out. I'm glad I have it in hand. The replacement locks I see on line don't look like the attaching point are oriented so as to align with the dash flanges and door/striker relationsips. Also the replacements and those said to be original are not the same as ours. Ford must be different mold and installation relationship. Fortunately the lock is malfunctioning such that I can reinstall my original and still open and close but not lock the lid. 42 I thank you for helping me to stay with it.

A locksmith should be able to replace the pins in the lock so it will function again. The glove box lock and the trunk lock should be keyed alike. The Ford and Mercury locks are different, but I thought that it was only the large bezel on the Mercury lock. It is good to know that there are other differences. The Mercury lock P/N is 29A 7006081-A. The same lock was used up to 1948, so you may be able to find one in a parts car if yours cannot be repaired. Tom

Just a follow up. With the large bezel removed the lock/latch assy. go in and out easily. The bezel can be remved by protecting the surrounding paint with tape. Pry the bezel up from the rear(in car position)to pop it loose from the casting. Depress the release button fully with a dowel or other that is smaller diameter than the release button. Raise the bezel and it will move forward and away (with the button fully depressed) to be lifted off. Installing the lock is easy and without the bezel the lock diamter is smaller than the hole in the dash sheet metal. Once the lock assy. is in place and secure the bezel goes on the in same manner it was removed Ford has a plastic finish panel through which it protrudes and so the configurations differ from Mercury.
