Hi, I have a 1950 ford crest liner that I've been working on and most done. The problem i still have is getting my overdrive working correctly. I've replace everything from the relay to the solenoid and it works great until driven for a while than quotes working... The next day the same for maybe the first 10 miles than again stops working...Any suggestion on what to look at or what it might be doing? Thank you much Don

I first suspect electrical. What voltage system are you using ? (6 or 12) Be sure your feed wire to the solenoid is ample and switch is in good shape. I have 12 volt, use #12 wire with 30 relay and fuse. Be sure your OD is grounded well.

The relay, the kick down switch and the governor are all made with contacts that are riveted on to a base. Corrosion gets in between the contacts and the base. I fixed one overdrive by soldering all of these contacts to their base. I fixed the same symptom in another car by taking the solenoid apart, sanding the points and cleaning out the old sticky grease. However, none of these things worked on a third car and I had to replace the solenoid to cure the problem.

I sure thank you and I will start out with the solenoid cleaning...The rest of the parts are new but still could have corrosion.. Makes sense and many thanks, Don

PS the car still has the 6v system

I will be interested in what you find. I just bought a '51 with the same problem. The overdrive quit about 60 miles into my 160 mile trip home when I slowed for some signals. I will be looking into it as soon as I get the turn signal wiring straightened out.

There are two sets of points under the cap on the solenoid. One allows the solenoid to pull, and the other holds it engaged. This is necessary to provide the big voltage necessary to pull, and have enough to hold it at the end of the solenoid travel without the current drain. It is likely one or both point sets are burned from years of use. They can often be filed enough to restore them.

  Glen, good looking Victoria.

Thanks, Tom. It's the perfect car for me at this stage. All of the basics are in good shape and it came with a judging sheet with about two dozen point deductions that are mostly easy to fix (tape and plastic clips on wiring, wrong hose clamps, wrong battery, etc.). Still having fun after all these years...
