Topic: License Plate Topper

Steves46    -- 03-14-2010 @ 5:40 AM
Does anyone know who is selling reproduction license plate toppers of the one given out by Ford in the 40s that showed a cartoon character of a cop with the phrase "Let's take it easy?" I have seen them from time to time on Ebay. Thanks.

I don't think anybody reproduces it as there is quite a few original ones on Ebay at any given time. I bought one couple years ago on Ebay and it was NOS in original packing, all different prices at given times. Don't buy one for a 37 Ford coupe like I did,it can only fit on license plate one way and in way of opening trunk.

I know what you mean, but I use them on the front plate.

Steves46    -- 03-14-2010 @ 10:08 AM
  Thanks 37. I'll keep a watch on E-Bay.

There are reproduction ones out there. Originals had the corners of the tab that fits over the license plate rounded.
The reproduction ones have that tab at 90 degrees square.
A lot of people have paid big bucks for the reproduction ones.
Also, the originals had a little reflective material at the raised edges.

Regarding toppers of any kind, keep in mind that back in the day, there weren't any freeways. I lost a nice topper to wind vibration metal fatigue on the freeway.

I have the 'Good drivers League' topper for 1940. I am afraid to put it on my car!

Don Rogers    -- 03-21-2010 @ 7:54 AM
This topper was given out in a contest run by Ford in late 1949. Here is a copy of the pamphlet that came with it.

JebNY    -- 03-21-2010 @ 5:29 PM
One of those would look nice on my 1950 F1. A repro would be fine. Anyone know who sells them?

  37 coupe
I checked it out on E-Bay, if you read the feedbacks, this person has some issues,
WOW $450.00 PLUS wants to charge EXTRA for shipping,!!!
well that's E-Bay. I see these sometimes at HERSHEY,PA
would thing a decent one might be worth $200.00 or so
my 3 cents worth 37RAGTOPMAN

JebNY    -- 03-22-2010 @ 5:43 PM
At those kind of prices for an original, I would definitely want a reproduction. Since my F1 is a driver I would not want a $200-450 piece of tin hanging on my plate to lose/steal.

Amen to that Jim. I know I have seen ads a few years back on re-pops and it's driving me nuts trying to remember where I saw it!

A fool is easily parted from his money on Ebay. Asking prices for some things are so bloated, just waiting for some fool to bid. That Topper and all the others were readily available at most good swapmeets before Ebay garnered all the business, and swapmeet prices were decent at $20 - $30 for most of them. The Harrahs Club covered wagon was the most expensive at $50 - $75.

The originals were of heavy gage steel, but I wouldn't expect a repop to be anything but thin aluminum. See how long one of them stays on your license plate! Vibration broke off an original American Flag topper from mine.

  hi
just type license plate topper in on a search on e-bay, I am sure there will be something there in your price range, there are all kinds of toppers,
I sold 2 that were from VERMONT, and were orginals from the state and town of Barton, highest was $25.00
if you go to a large swap meet they also will be there, there is one guy from MASS that repros all kinds out of aluminum, and are pretty nice, he sell on e-bay, about $35.00
ON the original toppers, like anthing else it is condition, condition, condition,,
I have had a original 'Lets take it Easy on my MODEL A for 20 years or more, never had a problem, with breakage,
good luck with your search, , also check for license plate reflectors

I have some info on the "Good Drivers League" and if at all possible, would like to have a picture of the plate topper. Neat piece. I found a lapel pin years ago at Hershey and bought it because it had a 40 steering on it. Really did not know what it was at the time.

alanwoodieman    -- 03-23-2010 @ 10:41 AM
remmember Ford went from the script to block letters in 1949--seem unlikely that it would be script after that.

nelsb01    -- 03-23-2010 @ 11:06 AM
  Steves46:
Try contacting Little Dearborn in Minneapolis. They had some not so long ago -- and may still.

I think they are on the links page.

Don Rogers    -- 03-23-2010 @ 1:07 PM
Here's a shot of the plate topper, pin and entry form

Steves46    -- 03-23-2010 @ 5:41 PM
