Topic: 1940 transmission lube

After taking my 40 for it's first test drive with it's rebuilt transmission it is hard to shift from low to second but it gets better as it warms up but I don't think it is as good as it should be. The clutch works fine. I used 140 wt. gear lube as the book says. Is there anybody who can recommend a thinner oil?

Personally, I've always used 90 weight in my 38 since the fifties. One thing that I've also found that makes for better shifting is a product called BG Gear Oil Additive. This is an extreme-pressure
additive that has a high sulfur content. You can smell the sulfur when you open the can, but it has worked well for me, even in hypoid rear axles.

Check your clutch pedal "free play". It shouldn't be much more than an inch. If the clutch isn't fully releasing, and removing tension on the transmission, shifting will be difficult. 140 weight is OK, and will reduce leakage, but is a problem in colder climates. A bit of STP will usually help there.
